City of Greensboro and UNCG begin Landlord-Tenant Dispute Program

The City of Greensboro Human Relations Department in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Program in Conflict Studies and Dispute Resolution will begin the Landlord-Tenant Dispute Program in April 2010.

Cathie Witty, Director of the UNCG Conflict Studies Program says, “Conflict studies are good to talk about, but most useful applied to the issues and challenges of our community. We hope this effort is the beginning of more projects like this—a collaboration between the City and the University in making services more responsive.” UNCG graduate student Nancy Sharpless, coordinator of the City-University initiative adds “the beauty of mediation is that the people involved in the dispute, in this case the landlords and the tenants, have the decision-making authority. Even if people cannot reach a mutually satisfactory resolution, they may gain greater understanding of the issues, and they do not lose the right to pursue other remedies.”

The City anticipates starting the program in early April and will begin scheduling mediation sessions as  referrals are made. For more information, contact the City of Greensboro Human Relations Department at (336) 373-2038.
